Grieving does not always come in ways we expect during our lives. Sometimes we know, for instance, our pets, for such a short period of time. We love many of these furry friends as deep and sometimes more deeply than the humans around us. They give all of themselves to us. No matter how bad our day has been they are waiting for us. My belief is that animals are very evolved. More so and sometimes more, than humans. They seem to be in tune to our every move. Just recently I had to have my Chocolate Lab, Alex, put to sleep (March 2008). At times I reflect back in time, on my life and then, I can think of his. Alex was a soul animal. He had the loyalty of a thousand dogs. He came into my life through chance. He had wondered onto my daughter’s teacher's property. He called us to come get him because he feared his dogs would not accept him. Alex, came into our home with three other dogs and a cat (that was at the time about seven years old). He entered the door and I believe he found peace. I was certain that he was homesick or someone was heart broken to have lost him. This was around Thanksgiving, I told my wife that all I wanted for Christmas was to find Alex’s home. I spent hours calling animal shelters and rescues with no luck. I was making myself sick in worry that someone had lost such a great dog. Then a friend asked me if I had him scanned, for a micro chip. So God found purpose here. I took him down the road to the nearest vet to have him scanned and found that he did have a chip. I felt so blessed. I was going to get my Christmas wish. Well, it turned out that his batch of chips were not registered. Then divine intervention happened again. Someone from the vet’s office called the company and the company found the area where the chip was issued. They pursued until they could get me more information. I was so grateful. Well, to shorten the story, I found out that Alex had had five previous owners in his two-year life. Then I felt sad. I decided that Alex wasn’t going anywhere. Even though I found all of his owners, they didn’t make an effort nor did they want him.  Alex found his home and family. That completed his life. He never tried to runaway again. He was with us for seven years and became part of our family. Blending in, in everyway. Whether he was going camping with us, or for long rides in the country, his own personality came through. Loyal...is the word I use for him. He always tried to please us. Sometimes we have to understand the issue of handling our love in many directions that God seems to put in front for us. We never really get a guarantee that tomorrow will be here for humans or pets. So always try to appreciate all that comes your way. I know our house has changed. We know he is still here in spirit and will never be forgotten in our hearts. I know he is free to roam again in the land of the rainbows and I’m sure he is standing guard around us. I have spoke with God and pray that he understands that we will see each other again. As I say, blessings come in many forms. Alex surely was a blessing to us during his short life.

Allow the light to shine,
